Dr. Jon Courand
Director, Pediatrics
Residency Program

Hello and welcome to University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Department of Pediatrics website!

My name is Jon Courand and I am the Residency Director for the Department of Pediatrics. The program in San Antonio is a mid-sized, general pediatric oriented program with a family feel and strong ties to the community. We pride ourselves on our passion for innovation in education, being one of the first programs in the nation with a required curriculum in Quality Improvement, a nationally recognized international elective Community for Children on the Texas-Mexico border and a robust longitudinal advocacy program. In addition we were one of the first Pediatric programs in the country to provide tablet computers to all of our residents and to create a fully implemented web-based academic suite for all facets of our resident’s clinical and academic training. San Antonio is located in heart of one of the fastest growing area for children less than 5 years of age and between 5 and 13 years of age in the nation, providing an excellent and diverse patient care experience.

Perhaps you have heard of some of the dynamic changes happening in San Antonio!  The University of Texas Health Science Center and our Department of Pediatrics has been working over the past two years with our primary hospital partner the University Health System to develop a comprehensive pediatric care model for San Antonio, Central and South Texas.  The University Health System is rapidly expanding due in large part to its 900 million dollar capital campaign supporting the construction of two new facilities: one in the South Texas Medical Center and the other in downtown San Antonio.  Both locations are served by a network of over 20 community and school based clinics located across San Antonio and the surrounding area.   In the past year, we have successfully moved our Pediatric Outpatient and Subspecialty practices into a brand new, state of the art outpatient facility on the Robert B. Green campus in downtown San Antonio.  This LEED Gold Certified facility has allowed us to reach and exceed our acute care and continuity clinic targets within the first 5 month of operation, and now includes an afterhours Express Med clinic for children.   In April, University Health System opened its new 10-story, one million square foot, patient tower in the South Texas Medical Center.   Also LEED Gold Certified, this facility brings our total inpatient beds to over 100 including Inpatient Pediatrics, our Medical and Trauma ICU and separate Cardiac ICU.  Our 65-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Level 2 nursery along with our extensive term nursery bring that total closer to 200 inpatient beds.   These new facilities will be the first in San Antonio to bring all levels of general and subspecialty pediatric, pediatric surgical and mother-baby care under one roof, including outstanding regional trauma and burn care, solid organ transplant, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and cardiothoracic surgery.  Both our inpatient and outpatient services operate with full electronic health records, and an extensive wireless network for the use of our tablet computers.

With the overwhelming success of our transition, the Department of Pediatrics will be interviewing for a full complement of housestaff this year including 16 categorical positions and 1 preliminary position with first interviews set to begin the third week in October and going through to the end of January.  If you would like to learn more about our residency program and the transformative changes happening in health care for our city, please do not hesitate to call or email me.  You can reach me at my office number 210 562-5324 or through my email directly   I look forward to talking with you soon, and I am very excited for what lies ahead for our program and for the care we deliver to our community of children.
