UT Health Science Center to lead regional children’s cancer research group with $3.7 million grant. Pediatric oncologists at the UT Health Science Center will lead a consortium of regional providers in pediatric cancer research trials under a new $3.7 million grant from the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Gregory Aune

UT Health Science Center pediatric oncologist appointed to national advocacy board. On Friday, the White House held a closed briefing on pediatric cancer for childhood cancer advocates. During the keynote address, NCI Director Dr. Harold Varmus outlined the NCI commitment to pediatric cancer and announced the appointment of Greg Aune, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of pediatrics with The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Dr. Melissa Frei-Jones

Melissa Frei-Jones, MD, MSCI, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, and the medical director of the South Texas Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Center has been recognized for her work with UT Kids and new approaches to treating sickle cell disease in children.

The article highlighting Dr. Frei-Jones' efforts appears in the August edition of San Antonio Magazine.

Gregory Aune, MD, PhD, and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, has dedicated his life to conducting research on the basic science of cardiac disease in pediatric cancer survivors.

Division of Hematology-Oncology receives clinical trials award

The American Society of Clinical Oncology selected the Division of Hematology-Oncology in the Department of Pediatrics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to receive a 2007 Clinical Trials Participation Award. Only 10 awards were given, and only one award was made to a pediatric center. This award reognizes community oncology practices that actively participate in clinical trials.
